Developing Capacity from Rio to Reality: Who's Taking the Lead?

Capacity Development – Key to Sustainable Water Operations

This session focuses on the challenge of accomplishing sustainable water operations and the crucial role of capacity development (CD) in achieving this by addressing the individual, organisation and institutional levels.

It will address the sustainability of water operations from different angles, considering the relevance of reducing the different components of NRW for sustainable operations of water utilities, the role of institutional capacity to ensure sustainable operations and sustainability challenges for water facilities in a rural context. The empirical evidence presented in this session pans from Africa to The Netherlands and provides a basis for discussing the potential for learning. The case material highlights the threat that weak individual capacity poses for the sustainability of water services in rural areas and points at possible solutions to remedy this deficiency.
